Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Pre-preparation Session - November 25, 2025
  • Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Pre-preparation Session

    Tuesday, November 25, 2025, 1:00 P.M. - 2:30 P.M. (NST)
  • Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed in 2008 by The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia. In this competition, research students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT is not an exercise in trivializing research, but rather challenges students to consolidate their ideas and discoveries and present them concisely to a non-specialist audience within a strict three-minute timeframe, ensuring that anyone can easily grasp the essence of a student’s Master’s or PhD research. The 3MT competition cultivates students' academic, presentation, and research communication skills.

The School of Graduate Studies at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus will host our annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition in early 2026. The top winner will represent Memorial University at the Eastern Regional 3MT Competition hosted by Saint Mary’s University this year. To help master’s (thesis-route) and PhD students prepare, we are organizing a pre-preparation session to introduce the 3MT Competition and to announce the date of Memorial University’s 2026 3MT Competition.

We will hold the 3MT Competition Pre-Preparation Session on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 1:00–2:30 p.m. NST in the Beatrice Watts Boardroom (IIC-2014), Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, St. John’s campus.

During the session, we have invited the winner of the Fall 2024 3MT Competition to share their experience, including tips on preparation, lessons learned, and advice for participants. We will also provide details on this year’s first- and second-round procedures for the 3MT competition, including rules and eligibility, judging criteria, prizes, and the benefits of participating, to help research students better prepare. Students will also have the opportunity to network with peers and ask questions during the Q&A portion of the session.
