Research conceptualization is the process of transforming first thoughts into a doable research project. This involves complex decision-making around defining a research problem, constructing research questions, and developing an appropriate research design. Transferring the chaotic world of complex knowledge systems with multidimensional interactions into a well-conceptualized research project can be challenging.

In this workshop, we will explore a particular method for developing problem/purpose statements that many students have found extremely helpful. The problem/purpose statement provides scaffolding for making decisions as one sifts through the complexities of setting up a research project. It guides students through the beginning stages of research, as well as the later stages, helping them stay focused and conceptually on track. It has specific components but can be adapted and used flexibly across research paradigms.
